Punky folk-rockers, The Levellers, are launching a new competition with a five-day studio session up for grabs.
Bands and solo artists are invited to try out for the chance to record at their Metway Studios in Brighton.
It’s the latest in a series of events to celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Levellers, who will be performing a headlining show at The Royal Albert Hall in aid of The Teenage Cancer Trust on March 31.
Owned by the band, Metway Studios has played host to acts of the calibre of Nick Cave, Royal Blood, Shirley Collins, The Mission, Yonaka, Orbital and Sleeper over its 20-year history.
Levellers, who also have their own On The Fiddle label, have recorded eight of their own albums at the studios in Canning Street.
They will personally be judging the best of the entries at the end of April, with the winning artist getting the chance to record their music at the studio in August.
Besides the competition, Levellers have numerous upcoming releases scheduled to mark their 30 years in the business.
Following up on their Top 20 album We The Collective last year, the band are currently putting out a series of limited edition vinyl reissues remastered from the original analogue tapes by the band’s Jon Sevink.
Some of the albums have never been released on vinyl and each of the band’s original studio albums from the ’90s contain a bonus live album recorded on tour at the time of release.
March sees the release of three landmark albums on coloured vinyl: the double live Headlights, White Lines, Black Tar Rivers (1996) – recorded at the peak of their popularity – along with Mouth To Mouth (1997) and Hello Pig (2000).
Then on March 31, the band will headline and curate A Beautiful Night Out at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the Teenage Cancer Trust’s week-long residency at the venue.
Two months later, the band will release a double gold vinyl album celebrating perhaps their biggest achievement, 1994’s titanic Glastonbury headlining show.
Anthems like One Way saw the band holding an audience of 300,000 in the palm of their hands – still a festival record.
