GREAT MOMENTS IN MUSIC – No33 – Sabotage by the Beastie Boys

In no particular order some of my favourite music moments. No33 Sabotage by the Beastie Boys.

“AAAAAARRRGGGHHHHH!!!!”

Probably the song which features the best blood-curdling scream in hip hop – Sabotage is arguably the pinnacle of the Beasties’ considerable career.

BBC Radio 5-Live fans will also recognise it as the tune which heralds the start of Fighting Talk every weekend.

A fantastic fusion of punk distortion and record scratching, Sabotage was released in 1994 and featured on the Billboard chart-topping Ill Communication album.

It’s success was due in no small part to the Spike Jonze-directed video, which sees the trio sporting an assortment of bad wigs and even worse acting in an affectionate parody/homage to ’70s cop shows like The Streets San Francisco.

Always smarter and more socially aware than the frat-boy humour of their Def Jam debut Licensed To Ill would suggest, the Beastie Boys’ came to an abrupt and tragic end with the death of Adam “MCA” Yauch from cancer in 2012.

Remaining members Michael “Mike D” Diamond and Adam “Ad-Rock Horovitz chose to discontinue the band out of respect for Yauch, but the Beasties remain a powerful and pervading influence on the punk/hip hop scene.
