Perhaps the best known song by musical maverick Luke Haines, Lenny Valentino was taken from the Auteurs second album Now I’m A Cowboy.
With highly literate lyrics which set it apart from much of the laddish Britpop movement, Lenny V’s central conceit involves potty-mouthed 1960s US comic Lenny Bruce overdosing and waking up in the body of early Hollywood matinee idol Rudolph Valentino.
Parklife, it ain’t.
A singular artist, Haines can be frustrating, sarcastic, caustic and snide, but he’s never less than interesting – and Lenny Valentino is the perfect starting point for discovering his considerable body of work, both solo and with Black Box Recorder.
