GREAT MOMENTS IN MUSIC – No 46 – Chaise Longue By Wet Leg

*In no particular order some of my favourite musical moments. No46 Chaise Longue by Wet Leg

Well butter my muffins! Looks like I’ve got a new favourite band.

Isle of Wight duo Wet Leg are a hot ticket right now based on the extraordinary reception debut single Chaise Longue is receiving.

Sung, or largely spoken by Rhian Teasdale in a cut-glass English accent, with saucy lyrics, partly half-inched from Mean Girls, Chaise Longue pretty much arrived from nowhere this Summer.

Massive demand for streams of the single led to a standout appearance on Jools Holland‘s Later and Wet Leg now find themselves riding the wave of what for once seems like deserved industry hype.

I say ‘seems like’ because the band – formed after Teasdale invited long term friend and fellow guitarist Hestor Chambers to join her on tour – have only released four tracks so far.

Until very recently, besides Chaise…the only other indicator of the Leggies nascent protential was the equally arch Buffalo 66-referencing Wet Dream.

The video, for which, features the duo wearing red head scarves and ‘er matching lobster claws where their mitts should be.

They’ve since doubled their output with Oh No and BBC Radio 1’s “Hottest Record” Too Late Now.

They’ve also got an album ready to go and a US tour in March next year, followed by sellout UK dates the following month.

That self-titled album will be out on April 8, 2022 on Domino Records.

I don’t remember such a buzz around a band from a debut single since a bunch of spotty young oiks called Arctic Monkeys came up with I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor.

Whether Wet Leg will go on to match the Arctics’ success remains to be seen, but on this evidence, they have arguably better songs and defnitely better complexions.
