*In no particular order some of my favourite musical moments. No43 Rock Lobster by The B-52’s.
An obvious choice, perhaps, but a damn good record and perhaps one of the strangest hit singles ever.
Aided by the late Ricky Wilson‘s unusual guitar tunings Rock Lobster set out the B-52’s’ off the wall manifesto right from the get go.
A mix of sci-fi, ‘sixties girl group harmonies, post-punk and surf-pop, it’s built around a typically swewed riff and humorous largely nonsensical lyrics.
Quite a cocktail for a first Billboard Hot 100 single, but indicative of what was to come from one of the US underground’s most original and fun outfits.
The emergence of REM may mean the B-52’s are forever doomed to be the second best band from Athens, Georgia.
But thanks to brilliant, daft songs like Rock Lobster, they’ll always have a place in the hearts of oddballs and misfits all over this weird planet of ours.
