In no particular order some of my favourite music moments. No31 Dog Eat Dog By My Adam And The Ants.
The first time I heard Dog Eat Dog was in a school disco at my provincial primary in Kent. I was about eight.
“What the hell is this rubbish?” was our verdict at the time – two weeks later we were all obsessed with Adam and his insects.
I had a full length poster of Adam in his Prince Charming phase plastered on my wall and once, tragically submitted, all too willingly, to allowing my sisters to make me up like him, complete with white stripe across the nose.
So how did Adam go from also-ran to King of the Wild Frontier?
Well, as the story goes, the erstwhile Stuart Goddard, having lost his first backing band to Malcolm McLaren‘s Bow Wow Wow, hooked up with one-time Banshee Marco Pirroni.
Together the pair came up with a new wave mash up of Burundi drums and Sergio Leone spaghetti Western soundtracks and perhaps the most unlikely chart-topping act of the ’80s was born.
Adam’s had his well documented mental health problems since his heyday, but looks to be fully recovered and is out performing again.
I’ll always be grateful to him and this song for setting me down the path to a lifelong love affair with music.
Just don’t ask me to explain what “Brush me daddy-o” means.
