*In no particular order some of my favourite music moments. No41 Sell Me A Lemon by Ming City Rockers. Bang up to date with this one – at least by my standards. I was turned on to Ming City Rockers by none other than Walter Lure – last man standing of New York’s Heartbreakers. Walter said he’d never heard such […]
Great Moments In Music
*In no particular order some of my favourite music moments. No40 She Sells Sanctuary by The Cult. Released back in 1985, She Sells Sanctuary will always have a special place in my heart, because its chart success felt like a victory (albeit a small one) against the prevailing pop pap of the time. Alternative and indie singles by the likes of […]
*In no particular order some of my favourite music moments. No39 Horrorshow by Scars. Edinburgh’s Scars had everything – a charismatic frontman, talented musicians, a great image and best of all wonderful songs. So why the short-lived quartet didn’t have more success and are not better known today is something of a mystery. I only became aware of them […]
*In no particular order some of my favourite music moments. No38 Lost Weekend by Lloyd Cole And The Commotions. Formed in Glasgow in 1982, Lloyd Cole and the Commotions were responsible many of the most literary and erudite country-tinged pop songs of the decade. Led by the enigmatic Derbyshire-born Cole – a sort of nicer Morrissey – they made two brilliant […]
In no particular order some of my favourite music moments. No37 O Superman by Laurie Anderson. Eight minutes long and performed by a then little known American street artist, Laurie Anderson‘s O Superman is perhaps one of the unlikeliest UK chart hits of all time. Written in response to Operation Eagle Claw, a disastrous 1980 attempt by the American military to rescue hostages […]
In no particular order some of my favourite music moments. No36 Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack. One of the most original and consistent acts to emerge from the Bristol-based trip hop movement, Massive Attack have made more than their fair share of extraordinary records. I’ve chosen Unfinished Sympathy because it’s a perfect single – dramatic, self-contained and featuring the soaring, powerhouse […]
In no particular order some of my favourite music moments. No35 I Can’t Escape Myself by The Sound. Despite being a massive Joy Division fan – hence the tile of this blog – I’m ashamed to say I’ve only recently discovered The Sound. Though formed in south London, The Sound clearly shared a musical kinship with their Manchester contemporaries – […]
In no particular order some of my favourite music moments. No34 Your Woman by White Town. Perhaps one of the unlikeliest UK No1s in musical history, Your Woman by White Town is the very definition of a one hit wonder. Though released on a major label, it had relatively little promotion and seemed to spread largely through word of mouth.
In no particular order some of my favourite music moments. No33 Sabotage by the Beastie Boys. “AAAAAARRRGGGHHHHH!!!!” Probably the song which features the best blood-curdling scream in hip hop – Sabotage is arguably the pinnacle of the Beasties’ considerable career.
In no particular order some of my favourite music moments. No32 Freak Scene by Dinosaur Jr. My first encounter with Dinosaur Jr, and Freak Scene in particular, was on BBC’s little known and probably even less seen Snub TV. This was the late ’80s and in those days it was the only show, apart from maybe Whistle Test, where you could watch non-chart […]
